Export Development Canada’s Trade Confidence Index (TCI) captures the perspectives of more than 900 Canadian exporters a year and reveals information not readily available in traditional trade statistics. The biannual index showcases the concerns and expectations of Canadian companies for the future, and their evolving international strategies. EDC has conducted this survey since 1999.


 

Overall outlook: The TCI’s five key findings

1. Canadian trade confidence remains above pre-pandemic levels and the survey’s historical average

2. Confidence is high when it comes to export and domestic sales

Respondents’ outlook on export and domestic sales continued to be optimistic, building on the strength of recovery from earlier in 2021. The large majority expect sales to increase over the next six months.

3. Supply chain issues and difficulties accessing skilled labour are impacting exporters’ recovery efforts

Survey respondents cited these challenges among their Top 5 most significant issues impacting their ability to keep and grow their international business.

4. Canadian companies are facing increased trade barriers

For those who experienced increased trade barriers, imposed restrictions and supply chain and logistics-related issues were among the top challenges.

About EDC’s Trade Confidence Index

This TCI survey was conducted Oct. 5 to Nov. 5, 2021, and released Dec. 16, 2021. Twice a year, EDC surveys Canadian exporters and businesses planning to export. The results are a pulse check of Canadian exporters’ level of confidence and their expectations of international trade opportunities over the next six months.
