Business Environment
Canada has a well established trade relationship with Algeria. Opportunities exist in the public sector for large and experienced Canadian exporters in the infrastructure and oil & gas sectors, given the ambitious infrastructure spending plan announced for 2010-2015 by the Algerian government. Most foreign enterprises active in the country have service contracts with the public sector enterprises. There is limited scope for foreign investment and foreign financing due to the regulatory environment. Bureaucratic delays caused by a highly-centralized administrative culture are common. The private sector remains relatively small, although the food processing and consumers goods sectors have seen significant growth. Strikes and small socio-economic protests will be frequent in 2011 but are unlikely to significantly disrupt business. We continue to monitor the ongoing political situation in the region very closely.
