Although a small country, Gabon is an important oil producer in Sub-Saharan Africa. The country has enjoyed relative political and economic stability over recent years. While the government has recently undertaken a strategy to diversify, mainly leveraging natural resources (hydroelectricity, mining), the economy is still heavily dependent on oil and the low oil prices represent a major challenge for the country. Canada has an established trade relationship with Gabon. We see export and investment opportunities across specific sectors that match Canadian capabilities. Gabon is part of the Communauté Économique et Monétaire de l'Afrique Centrale -CEMAC- region which reduces the risk of currency volatility.
