Uzbekistan was governed by a highly centralized authoritarian regime until 2016, and in recent years has made progress implementing reforms to liberalize the economy and develop the role of the private sector in the economy. The country is a major cotton producer and natural gas and power supplier. Until recently there were very few opportunities for Canadian exporters due to the country’s poor track record.
