Serbia has a transitional economy with significant state sector dominance, although privatization of national assets is on-going. The economy relies on manufacturing and exports, driven largely by foreign investment. The country has made progress towards EU membership (January 2014, Serbia started membership talks with the European Union (EU)) and is also pursuing membership negotiations with the WTO; however lack of transparency remains an issue. Canada has established but limited trade and investment relationship with Serbia, although there is potential for opportunities across a wide range of sectors.
