Business environment in South Africa

With a deep and globally integrated financial sector, South Africa has one of the strongest and most diversified commercial operating environments on the continent. Governance indicators, however, have been deteriorating in recent years as the state-management of some sectors has led to interference and corruption.
The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted South Africa’s economic growth, which presents an opportunity for reform given the need to address the public sector wage bill, boost private-sector participation and curb corruption. Necessary economic reforms, however, may compound social-stability risks. Weakened business confidence due to the minimal progress made in resolving long-standing structural problems, including securing a reliable power supply, is also an issue.
