Exporting 101: 5 resources to help Canadian businesses grow internationally

August 17, 2026 Build an Export Plan Part 2 of 4 in series

Author details

Emiliano Introcaso, CITP

Advisor & senior product operations manager

In this article:

  • Export advisors and on‑the‑ground support in foreign markets
  • Trade lawyers, consultants and expert advice on export rules
  • Using Canada’s brand advantage when selling internationally
  • Five of the best export resources for Canadian businesses

When it comes to exporting, diversification matters. Canada is a relatively small domestic market, so many Canadian businesses grow by expanding sales beyond our borders—often starting in the United States. The 2008 financial crisis underscored the risk of relying too heavily on a single market and highlighted the value of a diversified customer base.

Diversifying where you sell or invest is essential for reducing risks associated with economic, financial, or political changes

For many exporters, markets such as Europe can act as springboards to broader global expansion—particularly given Canada’s free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union.

By leveraging agreements, like the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), Canadian businesses can access reduced tariffs and streamlined regulations when entering European markets. This not only opens up opportunities to sell to the European Union’s 27 member countries, but also helps Canadian exporters build valuable experience navigating international trade, regulatory frameworks and diverse consumer preferences.

Success in Europe can enhance a company’s credibility and make it easier to approach other global markets, furthering diversification and reducing dependence on any single region.

Expanding into markets beyond North America is a key step in managing risk and ensuring long-term growth. As the article emphasizes, diversification is essential for Canadian exporters to protect their businesses from economic, financial, or political changes in any one market. By starting with Europe, companies can use the region as a launching pad for future global ventures, strengthening their resilience and competitive edge worldwide.

Export advisors and on-the-ground support in foreign markets

Once you’ve decided to export, building an export strategy often starts with in-market expertise. On-the-ground support can help you understand cultural norms, business practices- and customer expectations in your target market.

Trade shows are one way to meet foreign sales representatives and assess potential partners in person. Another trusted option is Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service, part of Global Affairs Canada. With 161 offices worldwide, trade commissioners support exporters by sharing market knowledge, identifying opportunities and connecting businesses with local contacts.

Industry and trade associations can also help connect you with local representatives and your professional network may offer valuable, experience-based insights. Partnering with a larger Canadian company—by joining its supply chain, for instance—can also reduce risk for first-time exporters.

Trade lawyers, consultants and expert advice on export rules

Expanding into new markets means navigating unfamiliar rules and requirements. Trade agreements, contracts and regulations can be complex, and legal language isn’t always easy to understand.

Working with trade consultants, or trade lawyers, can help exporters better understand concepts such as rules of origin, customs laws and tariffs, as well as understanding Incoterms to prevent export challenges.

Trade professionals are trained to simplify legal and regulatory language to help you make informed decisions.  Legal, consulting and credit-reporting firms can also support due diligence when evaluating foreign buyers. As a first step, the Trade Commissioner Service may be able to address many of your questions, drawing on its familiarity with local business conditions.

Using Canada’s brand advantage when selling internationally

Canada’s international reputation is a valuable asset for exporters. Successful Canadian companies often highlight their Canadian identity to build trust and credibility abroad.

Ways to leverage Canada’s brand include:

  • Co-branding with other Canadian companies at trade shows
  • Partnering with multinational firms to increase visibility
  • Using Canadian trade and government resources abroad
  • Sharing your story through media and marketing channels
